Tranquility

Brio is approaching her home leg. For this trip, that means closing the circle on the canal system she started at Troy, New York, just north of Albany. After leaving Chipman Point Marina, we went further south on the Lake, entering more and more narrow waters to finally reach Whitehall. This reputed to be the founding place of the U.S. Navy. It is certainly where Benedict Arnold built much of the fleet he used to fight the British at Valcour Island.

Brio entered the Champlain Canal at Whitewater and Lock 12. She continued south to Fort Ann where we pulled over to a floating dock to spend the night by ourselves. No marina, no noise.

Fort Ann is one of a series of forts built by the British that were battlefield sites in the Revolutionary War that led up to the British defeats at Bennington and Saratoga in 1777. The battles at Fort Ann and other forts were often draws, but they did serve to delay the British advance and allow the Americans the chance to build their military strength. That was key to General Burgoyne's defeats at Bennington and Saratoga.

Today, though, you'd never know that was such tension in the air. There was a snapping turtle, for example, who was hiding under the bridge to the floating dock.

And in the morning, there was mist on the Canal. Looking north:

And looking south:

Soon after these photos, we uncleated our lines and headed south. It was 0715, the start of our day to Albany.

Cheers,

Brio
