A Whole New Medium

Brio motored downstream from Summerland Island on June 21st. On the way, we passed by one more castle, the Singer Castle, of sewing machine fame. It's pictured below. What was more fun was getting to Ogdensburg and visiting a special museum just two blocks from where Brio rested for the night.

Frederic Remington lived in the Ogdensburg, New York area. He is famous, of course, for his bronzes, such as this one, The Broncho Buster.

He is also famous for his paintings, sketches and studies. He was a friend of a number of famous people of his time, including Teddy Roosevelt. TR appreciated Remington's close study of the West and his love for its way of life. Remington appreciated TR's love of the outdoors, a quality that dominated Remington's life.

Here is "The Charge of the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill" by Remington with TR on horseback, leading his men.

The paintings and sketches were so numerous that it is difficult to give them the attention they deserve. The same could be said for the bronzes. Some were given a center stage, though.

The Rattlesnake:

The Stampede:

And Coming through the Rye:

Of course, these bronzes are affecting. The detail, the level of observation and the love of subject are all overwhelming. Another aspect is the recording of all that is now passed. Taken as a whole, the exhibit is larger than life.

Another source of bronze sculptures featured in the museum is from Sally James Farnham, who also lived in Ogdensburg. As a woman in a male-dominated world, she stood out as an accomplished artist. Many of her works are featured. One whimsical one is Spring in the Jungle, a.k.a. The Courtship of Two Elephants:

Joyous.

After leaving Ogdensburg the next morning, we passed by Singer Castle. It was built at about the same time as the Boldt Castle.

Downstream from the Singer Castle, the River begins its transformation to a more urban world. It is straighter and industry becomes more evident.

This is of Brockville, near Ogdensburg. We are on our way to the Saint Lawrence Locks

Cheers,

Brio
